Day 3 Challenge

Frankie checks something on her cell phone. The bee swarm is coming close to a band of endangered black-footed ferrets I've imported to the island, and if they infect the ferrets, the ferrets might infect other animals -- or the bees might infect other animals. We do need to find out who killed Tina. But at some point... well, I'm going to need a plan for this.

Frankie needs you to write up a plan on how to:

1. Keep the ferrets away from the bees
2. Capture and contain the bee swarm before it does more damage
3. Design the ferrets a nice, new home in a safer place
4. Propose a way to safely get a DNA sample from the bees. They may be useful in my research.

Yes, Lars! That's who I was expecting. I hope you didn't have too difficult a trip. I'm glad you're excited [even after what happened to the last excited teenager here, but let's not talk about that.] It's a fun place, lots of my animals, we explore the environment and science and help others understand it...

...And we just, hmmm, dealt with the problem that had come up, so no need to worry about that.

Frankie puts her lost tranquilizer gun, now cleaned and made safe again, back at her hip where she usually wore it.

Ahh, a new person. Well, good luck to ya because I have the feeling things are about to get hairier very soon, Blaine says to Lars as he lets off a slight chuckle. Then he notices Frankie has her tranquilizer rifle back.

All right! Got your rifle back! Now you'll really be well-armed.

Frankie comes out with the stack of plans she and Blaine have been poring through. Thank you, all, for your plans, every one! Every idea helps.

Today, Blaine and I have in fact agreed on the best plan. Thank you, Grover and Grover Cloneland yet again! They are the only winners of today's challenge.

...I would also like to recognize Laurel and Yanny for their creativity, however. Really excellent!

The Cloneland's Plan

Step one: The ferrets can't encounter the bees if an ENORMOUS FIRE is lit between the two. The bees aren't about to attempt to cross a fire, and nor are the ferrets. So a contained ring of fire should do the job.

Step two: MORE FIRE is the solution. Or rather, smoke! Bees are known for being susceptible to smoke. So, issue smokers or whatever those things that are used to stun bees at apiaries are called, and use that to coax the bees into some place where they're better suited to be, while putting bee-attracting flowers at that place, and maybe some extracted queen pheromones, which this place would probably have lying around somewhere. THEN SURROUND THE PLACE WITH MORE FIRE TO STOP THE BEES ESCAPING!

Step three: Their home should be like Wyoming, the natural home of the Black-footed Ferret, so set up a fairly flat preserve with hills on one side where Women can vote and coal is mined. And that has prairie dogs. They eat those. (Black-Footed Ferrets do, not Women.)

Step four: Obviously the best way to get DNA from bees is to capture them. There's bees conveniently contained in a fire ring, constantly dazed by the smoke they're always downwind from. It should be easy to send someone in in a beekeeping suit to grab a bunch of them with a fine-meshed net. Then extinguish the fire and lure the bees to an isolated nesting place somewhere with more bee-loved flowers and queen pheromones.

Now to, well, do this thing!

You may again execute actions without needing to be rolled if you are accomplishing the challenge objectives :)

Lars quickly bends down to meet Kirby's height, before shaking his hand.

"Nice to meet you! I hope we can become good friends here!"

Stuart digs into his pocket...and there's matches!

"Lets do this!" He ignites a match.

"Nice to meet you too, Lars!" said Kirby.
"Now lets set some things on fire!"

"Um, do we have any matches? If we don't, I have an alternative."

Lars notices Stuart taking a box of matches out of his pocket.

"Oh, so that's where they are. Anyway. one group should start the fire while the other sets up the home for the ferrets. The DNA part should probably be Dr. Frankie's part, as she's one of the only ACTUAL scientists here."

"You ought to contain the fire, or else we'll be sweltering more than we already are!"

Classic Ignatius, doing literally nothing. Nobody minds, thankfully!

Frankie nods at Lars. Yes, I'll do the DNA extraction in my lab, indeed! But I am going to need a sample.

Excellent. Wyoming time.

We shall make a better Wyoming!

The Clonelands find an adequate patch of land to start building Wyoming, and set up some polling stations that say "Women allowed" on them.

While the Clonelands are setting up the habitat, Lars is trying to assemble the ferrets to the best of their ability.

Frankie grins. Nice work, Lars! And very nice attention to detail, Grover and Grover! I'm sure they'll feel at home. Not everyone knows where the little guys are from. Can I expect some animal protection legislation? Or a Supreme Court ruling supporting animal protection? I do hope the experience pushes you in that direction. Not to mention supporting a woman's right to vote...

We'll see.

There may be a purpose yet for not paving over all of nature and building factories.

But as is, currently, we're just building Wyoming.

While the Clonelands consider supporting further conservation efforts beyond "yellowstone can stay" and "maybe a couple others too" a decade before Roosevelt starts making them popular, they make a coal mine in the hills on the far edge of the new ferret enclosure.

Charles, upon hearing all that, says to the scientist: "Oh, you want this approved by the government? Well then good job keeping me alive so far, since I happen to work for a government - I'm sure I can get it approved."

That would be excellent, Charles! I... haven't had very good experience getting anything I try to do approved by government, to tell you the truth. It's rather soured me on the whole thing. One reason we're all the way out here in international waters...

...Okay, there may be other reasons too. She looks sideways at the new... coal. mine. She looks like she's about to facepalm.

The Clonelands, oblivious to how Wyoming without the Coal Mines could possibly be better than Wyoming with the Coal Mines, dump a large box of Prairie dogs they got from... somewhere, on the flat part of the enclosure.
