I will say, though, that having this be the first exercise we are put to without really knowing each other seems un-optimal and only likely to put us at one another's throats. Which may be the intent.

More to the point, culling the weak gives us less injury as a unit. We together can march as one, as the roman legions did. One in the shield wall who does not lock shields properly with their neighbors could weaken the formation more than if they merely never showed up for war that day.
