would love some feedback, particularly on how the hell an editing phase of writing something works.

I haven't read the whole thing yet, but you're off to a great start! I really like the sense of humor you had, especially with the reasoning behind Selfie's nickname (which is also a nice little nod at the fourth wall). I stop playing with the b- The POKÉBALLS. And put them in my pocket. is also a really funny little adult joke. Emily and Selfie also have a really nice dynamic, and I also like Selfie's snarkiness; also, it was really cool how you've managed to raise the stakes throughout the story, especially with the follower, the injury, etc.
Anyway, advice for editing: it actually occurs in four stages, really.
- The Development Edit: Going through the story and making sure character arcs, plot, etc. are cohesive.
- The Line Edit: Basically making sure the words flow well together; basically working on dialogue, narration, etc.
- The Copy Edit: Fixing minor grammatical and spelling errors, if possible.
- The Proofread: Using a fine-toothed comb to fix any errors that may have been missed in all the rest of the edits.
You can go through a ton of drafts, but overall I'd say that these 4 stages are a useful guide for editing. Now I should try applying that to my own story...
You know where you are? You're in the jungle baby.
