Wisdom Teeth

We lurk in the back of your mouth,
Waiting to find our way in.
Your first tooth fell out
Not too long ago;
Some fairies are buying your baby dents.
Please, let us be.
We just want the light.

Our time to strike is yet to arrive.
But one of us grows in here Sideways
To push at your bottom jaw,
Fold your teeth over like mountains.
Please, let us be.
We just want the light.

A big girl now, ain't you?
The pain you feel, great rite of passage.
Ole Sideways is fighting on, right through your gums,
Finally sighting a hint of the light.
Please, let us be.
We just want the light.

Something twists. Breaks the gums.
Light.

Sideways splits and cracks from the pressure,
Stripped out as an ancient screw.
One by one,
The drill finds its way,
Splinters us out into bits
As it yanks us right out.
Please, let us be.
We just wanted light.
