The Write Stuff (The Writing Thread)

I've decided to have a go at writing a fully-fledged story, and I decided to share an extract from it here:

It had been a tiring day, dealing with press conferences and interviews all day long. The Chief Scientist, Charles, could finally take a chance to relax in his office, and reached it when the clock struck 4PM. He opens the door, only to see his son, Larry, waiting for him in there with a look that said he wanted to talk NOW. "Can't you wait un--" He said, not even getting a chance to finish his sentence before being interrupted by the teen. "I can tell you lied to them, once again."

"I had every reason to lie, though." Said the Chief Scientist, before Larry retorts with "No you didn't. You never had a valid reason to lie about anything. Ever." Charles took one deep breath, closed the door, and said "I do have reasons for lying." Larry scoffed at this, and said "Is it the bribes you took? The credit you stole for other people's work? I never once cared for anything you said, so why should I care about the lies you've told about a dumb space rock?"

"BECAUSE IT WILL DESTROY THE EARTH, YOU BRAT!!" Charles yelled, which took Larry by surprise. "What? It's barely big enough to take a minor village off the map!" Said the teen, to which his father replied "You are WRONG. That thing is HUGE! Enough to completely obliterate the planet itself! That is why I lied to them at the press conferences today - TO KEEP THEM FROM PANICKING!" Larry was stunned. He had no argument for this. For once, his father did have the right to lie to the public. Larry decided to just leave his father's office room, but before he opened the door, his father calmly said "Please............tell no-one of what we just spoke about."

"We'll see, you corrupt fraud."
