I was thinking that the element that would have to be the most carefully handled would be the racism. I think the two things that typically make the Cthulhu Mythos child-unfriendly are 1. the racism (obviously) and 2. the soul-crushing cosmic horror. Element number 2 would be downplayed regardless, but the crux of the story would be the conflict between the racist Lovecraft and the black protagonists, so element number 1 would be addressed explicitly.
Of course, the topic of racism can theoretically be done well in a family film; for example, The Princess and the Frog and Zootopia. But even then, it was muted in the former and presented allegorically in the latter.
Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?
