I think that Otherkin are generally viewed (by those in the furry community anyway) as weirdos, but harmless weirdos. The problem is that anyone less familiar with them will see Otherkin as outright insane, and that drives "normal" furries to make the distinction really clear for those not in the know so that they don't get lumped in with the crazies.
Though I don't doubt that some furries genuinely think that Otherkin are crazy and reflect badly upon them.
