Art criticism is an inherently partial medium. It's all about expressing subjective opinions on subjective works. There seems to be this weird, widespread expectation that critics are going to be totally objective and unbiased when that is literally the antithesis of what their job is about. If I had to guess, it's because they don't realise critics aren't meant to be the be all end all of opinion. They're only useful insofar as your tastes align with theirs.
As for why Pitchfork gets particular flak for this? Iunno man, if I had to guess it's because their tastes are "uncool". (which they aren't any more, they gave the fucking 1975 their song of the year award last year lmao)

some journalists tend to love that machine gun kelly album but for the most part many agree that it's kinda crappy
rateyourmusic also tends to be more representative of the masses because civilians, not critics, are reviewing it
