Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?

Joke story idea: Mrs. Frisby and the Secret of NIMBY. A story where cute little mice protest against the government for building a landfill near their home.

Personally I want to see a fictional take on that one New Hampshire town that got taken over by libertarians, then everything went to hell, could make a good comedy.

I'm watching “The Men Who Built America” And I keep thinking about how the world was destroyed by some rich guys trying to out-rich each other.

The plot: The Lincolns, a dysfunctional black family living in Providence, Rhode Island, are given the chance to get their act together after being caught in a reality-warp encompassing all of New England. The cause of this supernatural situation: the restless ghost of H.P. Lovecraft himself! After being summoned by a cult of alt-right Lovecraft fans, the infamous author reshapes reality according to his fantasies, and the Lincolns are put in the unenviable position of saving New England from this eldritch evil. With the aid of the astral adventurer Randolph Carter, our protagonists set out to defeat Lovecraft the only way they know how... by kicking abomination ass! And the power of love, I guess.

Working titles: The Lincolns vs. Lovecraft (Yes, derivative, I know. It's a working title!), Black People vs. Lovecraft, H.P. Lovecraft Does Not Like Black People. I'm thinking of it as a meditation on mental illness, depression, bigotry and cynicism, and how these issues can be countered through love, forgiveness and idealism. And also as an examination of H.P. Lovecraft's mental issues, the toxicity of fan culture and nerd entitlement, and how excessive cynicism can be an excuse to avoid problems rather than deal with them healthily.

Sounds like a pretty fun dramedy. Heh, could be pretty nice.

I was thinking that the element that would have to be the most carefully handled would be the racism. I think the two things that typically make the Cthulhu Mythos child-unfriendly are 1. the racism (obviously) and 2. the soul-crushing cosmic horror. Element number 2 would be downplayed regardless, but the crux of the story would be the conflict between the racist Lovecraft and the black protagonists, so element number 1 would be addressed explicitly.

Of course, the topic of racism can theoretically be done well in a family film; for example, The Princess and the Frog and Zootopia. But even then, it was muted in the former and presented allegorically in the latter.

Zootopia didn't have that great of an allegory anyway. Why would predators be represented as the oppressed minority when they're the ones who eat people?

Side-note: That scene where the rabbit holds her child toward her after a tiger comes by would be a lot more visually interesting if it were a large "prey" animal (say, a giraffe) holding her child away from a small "predator" animal (say, an otter).

That reminds me of all those works that feature bigotry against a group of people with abilities beyond those of mere mortals. And in those cases the allegory doesn't hold up, because black people (for example) don't have any particular natural advantage over white people, while witches/wizards (for example) have a definite natural advantage. In which case the Beware the Superman trope comes into play; of course you should be scared of magic-users, psychics, superhumans, vampires etc.! Racism is irrational by nature, but if people in the other group all have the ability to mind-control you, tear your head off with their bare hands, burn you to ashes with eye lasers and so on, then bigotry against them is hardly irrational.

Of course, that isn't to say that this type of bigotry is unlikely considering the possible future existence of cyborgs, designer humans and other technologically enhanced people, but if you want to portray that, you should treat it like a new issue, not compare the treatment with current real-life racism.
