Okay, so clearly it's not "starting with a letter" that's breaking it. I wonder what is. It appears as normal in the text field after previewing, but looks broken in the preview.
So it's rolling over beyond valid hexadecimals into invalid... but then it's apparently valid on the lower one. Madness.
