Well, even then they're not doing it out of respect for the dog's wishes (because the dog has no wishes one way or the other), but rather because they're being corrected about the dog's sex.

It's like with babies. If you tell someone that the baby they thought was a girl is actually a boy, they'll let themselves be corrected, because it's about the baby's sex, not their gender. It's only when you try to correct someone on their gender identity or preferred pronouns that people get argumentative/intolerant.
