The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Tre - 01-26-2021

feel free to imagine the thread as a freshly remodeled Dave & Busters with the so-bad-it's-kinda-great logo on the front

It's a thread about video games. (Particularly, either the ones that aren't discussed enough to warrant their own threads OR the ones that just haven't spawned said threads just yet.)

Naturally, I'll start off with an old fave that likely won't be particularly relatable to anyone but means a lot to me all the same: Tiny & Big in Grandpa's Leftovers, a 2012 3D platformer about a dude just trying to get his magic underwear back from some meanie. It's been a while since I replayed it, but I've been in a nostalgic mood recently and this place wouldn't have the mark of my presence without me mentioning the damn thing somewhere on here, so.

I think what's gotten this one to stick around so well for me is that there honestly just isn't much out there like it -- the grindhouse and indie comic-style visuals, the off-kilter soundtrack with chiptunes slotted in alongside sludgy stoner rock and breezy psychedelica, Tiny and the Radio's shared sense of humor that isn't afraid to reference the weird conventions of the video game they're the main characters of, and the sheer power you've got over the environment you're in at almost any given moment... one of the chief public criticisms of T&B is that there simply isn't more of it, and while there's absolutely a part of me that craves a return to the whole thing, I also just find myself thankful that the experience we got doesn't overstay its welcome and instead chooses to leave a killer impression worth remembering fondly.

aight there's that. I guess I could talk about Destiny here too or smthn but I wanna hear what y'all like

AW YES OBSCURE VIDEOGAME TIME BAYBEE

ok uhhh. i've been thinking on playing Distorted Travesty 3, a game that harkens back to these old newground days where sprite animation was king and shoving every character you know into your works was considered good writing. it's also pretty hard (first playthrough resulted in over 1000 deaths). as the 3 implies, theres a 1 (not as good as the others, too many buttons) and 2 (an improvement with streamlined controls n action. a bit on the short side though)

just got past the Water Temple which was intentionally designed to be frustratingly complex. yay

In obscure games I've been thinking a lot about lately, Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls comes to mind. A game free on Steam that's best described as Shovel Knight meets...

nah that's it. What it lacks in original gameplay though, it makes up for in fun writing and pretty neat character designs. If anyone here still needs their Shovel Knight itch scratched (somehow, after the four billion spinoffs it has), Khimera is pretty great for a free game.

My first playthrough of Cave Story+ was on Hard, but it is so much more satisfying to play on Original. Getting hit feels sufficiently punishing by taking away your Weapons EXP rather than killing you instantly, and the Missile Launcher is a great risk-reward tool. I didn't know what I had been missing by playing on Hard.

I picked up the CS+ rerelease on Epic last year when they had it free! Might have to give it another go. (And yeah, that's the system I remember well from the original game. I played a port of it on the PSP about a decade ago.)

Y'all the Repentance DLC for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is coming this spring and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'm so excited it looks and sounds so good and it's based off of the already-good Antibirth mod and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Do you guys remember this game called Disney Infinity

BECAUSE I DO BABYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Subparman - 01-31-2021

Holy shit, come to think of it, what happened to that game? It feels like it got a big deal made out of it by LPers and all for a while, then basically disappeared off the surface of the earth after a week. I remember downloading it but I haven't heard anything about it for ages.

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Huney - 01-31-2021

Disney decided it wasn't profitable after every company decided to milk the Toys to Life gimmick and axed it just a bit after 3.0's launch.

"big rant towards grind game incoming"
i hate this game
[Image: unknown.png]

it advertises itself as a RPG, but oh wait whats that? the game is actually 'glitch the autofire feature and leave it running on the background: the game'.
you wanna fight epic enemies? too bad, every. single. fucking. enemy DOES THE SAME THING.
THAT IS TO FOLLOW YOU AROUND, HURT YOU ON CONTACT, THEY'RE MORE PLATFORMER ENEMIES THAN RPG ENEMIES.
and there's an ascension feature where wow congrats you got such a big level now DO THE WHOLE GRIND OVER AGAIN IF YOU WANNA ACTUALLY LEVEL UP AT A REASONABLE RATE
GOD. DAMN.

lets get to Glitchland wowee fun RIDE EVERYONE.
>> i got these 3 key items and entered a secret area to get a Big Key but you can't pick it up, after LOSING your 3 key items.
>> you literally can't get hurt if you position yourself properly inside the enemy
>>the autofire function occasionally bugs out and just. breaks the weapon entirely
>> there are cheese spots (thank god otherwise i would've lost my mind in all this grind)

i am ECSTATIC that this ''''''game'''''' is no longer receiving updates
because i pity anyone who gets trapped into wasting hours upon hours of their life trying to get to level 7 bazillion to access the next area which has DOORS THAT REQUIRE LIKE 8 BAZILLION LEVELS.

FUCK

i just realized this is a roblox game and this is the general games thread but honestly Infinity RPG is literally a grinding simulator with no charm or stuff like that imo i would be stretching to call it a game.

So Kingdom Hearts 1 to 3 are coming to PC. According to this article, apparently some of the games are also bundled with spinoffs/plot-important media? I don't get the naming scheme tbh.

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Huney - 02-11-2021

What I'm reading is that it's getting everything from I.5+II.5, that's 1, 2, Chain of Memories, Birth By Sleep, and the cutscenes of Re:Coded and 358/2 Days, then it's getting the Birth By Sleep epilogue, then Kingdom Hearts 3, then Melody of Memory

Long story short, everything

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Huney - 02-11-2021

Actually to make it easier, it's just everything in the Story So Far collection (read again, everything), plus the two new games that came out since then

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - awe921 - 02-12-2021

i wonder if there's gonna be a numbered kingdom hearts installation that gets so many spinoff related to it that by the end of the thing it'd be Kingdom Hearts (number).4484969129387123812093809485830: Mystery of Hearts

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Huney - 02-12-2021

No you're thinking of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Guma - 02-12-2021

Anyone else play Dragon Quest XI? I'm on a high for it right now. And I'm gonna get that true ending even if it takes me 100+ hours.

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - Huney - 02-12-2021

I played a good bit of XI, but I stopped because Strange Journey ate my life

RE: The Video Arcade (general video game discussion) - ArmoredFury - 02-12-2021

I checked the Kingdom Hearts page on EGS and holy shit what are those prices

I know big publishers aren't known for lowering prices and these releases have extra features, but really? 50$ for a 19-year old game?
