Challenge Day 5
…I'm sorry I trusted Paul. I know it's a bad situation, but it's not quite over, and I can't do it alone. Do rest for a bit. Gather your strength. However, there are some things we'll need to do. We're going to need to:
1. Find a way to capture these formerly-extinct bats (they're New Zealand Greater Short-tailed Bats, just to be clear.) I'd really rather they were captured alive so we can return them to the bat colony.
2. …I may need a better security system for my animal enclosures. Any ideas would be welcome. Especially ones we can implement at short notice.
3. Finally, we're going to need to find Paul and capture him before he can do more damage. I think attempted zombification of you all is enough justification for that. Any ideas on how to do that best will be appreciated.

Hordak's eyebrows twitch as the ointment enters his wounds. "Except that wasn't just some virus. That was the zombie injection. There's a slim chance we are not all infected." He rolls his head back. His breaths increase, but stretching the chest gash is clearly stinging him.

Hordak scoffed. "Fine. Seeing as there's almost no chance I am not already infected, I will handle the bats. But only so I may kill Paul myself."
1. I absolutely cannot risk more blood drawn from my body. As for not getting infected, the boat has sailed on that one. Let's see...this research states that bats avoid light and are attracted to dark. Too bad it's broad daylight, so herding the bats with spotlights wouldn't be very effective. What we could do instead is create the darkest space possible. Multiple of them if the bats split up during their flight. Says here they spend most of their time on the ground, so these spaces shouldn't be up very high. If it's possible, release invertibrates in front of the entrance to bait them inside. If they've been exploring all day, they'll readily come in for food. Keep watching that makeshift cavern from afar so no bat gets left outside. When the last bat is inside, we could take one of those curtains made of heavy wire and roll it over the entrance, effectively keeping the bats inside. Nice little temporary bat exhibit. With protective gear on, we could slip inside and bag the bats from there, with the wire keeping them from escaping.
2. First of all, if Paul is listed as an authorized person here, deauthorize him as quickly as possible. If he continues to be authorized to our tech, then all our efforts will be void. I fear that any one of Frankie's employees could be a spy for Paul, but as you said, we have to take risks. By the time Paul is deauthorized, we should set up a new first gate in front of the main gate with a scanner programmed to check for an authentification. If it sees an enemy, it could give off a wail audible to everyone else on the island. That's more of a long notice idea, though. On short notice, position at least one guard in front of each animal pen. Arm them with a tranq gun and a taser if they aren't already. Dig deep trenches between the pen and the pathway, so the intruder gets stalled on their way to the gate, leaving us more time to take them down. Sometimes the simple ideas are most effective.
3. The entire island must be on full lockdown. Paul is planning to use that virus as a weapon, so we must prevent him from leaving to the mainland. Sabotage his vehicles if you need to. Every person under his employ must be subdued one way or another, though the reluctance of the one he zombified implies they might be reasoned with if they see what he plans to do. Position round-the-clock guards at every pivotal location. Use the better trained animals as attack animals. That's how we watch for him. How we capture him can't be an ordinary trap. I saw the knockout spray you used on his guards, so let us use it, and those tranquilizer darts. Arm your guards with the darts, make sure they have plenty since Paul is so slippery. As for the spray, we could plant triggers around those parts of the island that will release larger jets of the spray onto our target if he steps on them. Make sure our guards know where these triggers are so they won't get knocked out themselves. I would love to help you patrol for him, but I'm too...I have to save what little energy I can.
That done, he limped out of the room and onto the beach, where he collapsed again. Still breathing, just barely able to move at this point. And is that...actual fear in his eyes? He tapped on his tracker pad and pulled up Entrapta's picture, smiling weakly at it. If she wasn't here, that meant she had a greater chance of being alive.

1. Scour the island for the escaped bats, use the tranq guns we have, and return them to their colony.
2. Short term, we're just going to have to build better fences. If we have metal stuff, that'll do. Long term, we should think about electrifying the fences, maybe installing more security cameras.
3. Pretty sure he left his helicopter here. That seems usable, chances are Paul could be seen from the sky. As for capture, tranq guns again. Leave him in the quarantine cabin, it seems like that's the most secure room here.
Dusk seems exhausted. That fucking piece of shit... who does he think he is, trying to kill... us...

"We have to search through the island as fast as we can. When we found one, we'd better lure them in with their favorite food, or perhaps tranquilize them, and put them in safe containers!"

1. Bats... Hm. Okay, I did my research, and these microbats usually feed on mostly insects and fruit mostly, and also stay close to the ground unusually for a bat... So I suggest spreading those on the ground around the caves to lure them out... Oh, and to make sure that we can get the bats... Ground vibrations to get them to fly so we can more easily spot and capture them!
2. Okay... Security... Um... Okay, step it up. Um... quick! Brainstorm! Electric fences! Um... security guards and patrols and cameras! Um... lockdown procedures and quick failsafe protocols that lock down the surrounding area to prevent breaches! ... Hm... Yeah, I think all of those work, but we could PROBABLY save the fences for a more long-term thing, since it's gonna take time to get the metal and power and such...
3. ... Paul... Okay... So... PUT EVERYTHING ON LOCKDOWN. We can't risk the virus getting out of this island... Now... Check the exhibits and any dead bodies... If Paul can't get the virus from Frankie, then chances are he'll probably want to get the virus by... other means. Also check any empty spaces just to be sure in case he's biding his time until we let our guard down.

Ah! Thank you, everyone! Valiant efforts. There is one that stood out to both myself and Shoehorn, though. Congratulations, Hordak! I know you haven't been feeling well, so it must've been quite a struggle.
...I'm afraid after what Paul did, especially, I must advise you to check yourselves for any bites or scratches from the animals.

Once Hordak checked himself, he was honestly confused and in awe. No true scratches? No true scratches! I guess those lions were more bent on killing Hordak than infecting him. At least he gets to live another night, he supposed.
Hordak looks at Tsumugi in misery. "I...I may have to..." His voice trailed off.

Paul eventually wakes up from one of the tranquilizer darts that he got shot with. He looks around at everyone, realizing he's been caught. He looks to Frankie.
Frankie, come on. You know you want this deep down. Something that gives you great recognition for all you achieved or about to achieve. I sense you want it real bad. To be a part of something that you can excel in. More wealth than you can ever ask for. Just imagine what all you can do with it. And look, I'll even give everyone here payments to keep what happened back in the exhibits hushed up. I know it will work out perfectly. What do you say? I'll ask one more time. Accept my offer and I'll pretend all this never happened. We can still be a good team. Don't throw all this away, I implore you.
Forget it, Paul! You've just exposed yourself as who you are, Shoehorn said. There's no way she's going to help a madman like you.... right? he asks Frankie, feeling a bit unsure.

You're right, Shoehorn. I'm not. Hush money to cover up the fact that he... deliberately tried to infect my employees ? And I expect he still wants a zombie virus weapon. I told you, Paul, I'm sure I can find support elsewhere. I may not be ruined. But you will be. The answer is no.
You're going to say I'm hypocritical, aren't you? I'm no better than you are? I just don't admit it, right? I get my employees into situations where they get bitten and infected. I do things for my own pride, and glory, and standing in the world. Well, fine, you're right, there are things I'm not proud of. As correct as I thought them at the time. But at least I try to work for the greater good, and make things right. More to the point though, there's a reason my research is on this island, and it isn't all because I couldn't get college research boards in the States to sign off. It's to keep it contained. I'm working on a cure. And you... you go and want to use it for a weapon. That will spread. To everything. Are your superiors aware that you want to use a bioweapon, Paul? You're aware that's against the Geneva Convention? I'm sure you are. You just don't care. Because you think you'll personally benefit and be able to get a cure. Am I right?

Seems like you've made up your mind then. And why not? People die in war all the time. All the armies, their families, even innocent people. It's war, people die. Cold hard reality people need to accept. They don't matter in the long run, they're all just numbers. They don't matter in the long run. They're all sacrifices for a greater purpose. And it's one that I see a lot of potential in. Because we are all looking to evolve all the time. There are all these opportunities to take and I see this one. This will be the biggest thing yet. If we drop bombs and kill people with drones, and use biological weapons on people, what's another virus, am I right? What difference does it make who's all infected? People die in war, it makes no difference. And don't worry about the Geneva Convention. If you know the right people and throw money at them all, you'll get very far. It's a shame you don't want to put in the full potential of this money-maker for us. But just in case you said no, I actually took some of the virus myself, safely contained in my helicopter. If you won't help, I know people who will. And are you sure I'm about to be ruined? I think it's you who's about to be ruined.
He pulls out his phone and makes a call.
Get me to the Pentagon right away. Yes, this is Paul Carter. I'm at the island right now. I got a sample of the virus. And it's safely contained and I'm about to head back right now. But this virus is all over the island. It's a huge threat to anyone who comes around. I barely made it out without zombification myself. But what if other people visit? I think it'd be best if we nuked it off the island. Excellent, thank you. I'll be out of here soon. Bye.
Paul then looks at Frankie and Shoehorn with a look on his face that makes him think he's won.
So, I don't have leverage, do I? Looks like you're not as smart as I thought. We could have been something, you and I. But no matter. I'll be someone myself. I don't need you. Because in 24 hours, a plane will come by and nuke this island off the face of the Earth. And I'll be long gone when that happens. I told you, Frankie, you just made a big mistake. Maybe it's something for you to think about right before you get vaporized alongside everyone and everything here. So long.
Paul quickly makes his escape to a Jeep and drives off. Shoehorn tries to catch him, but it's no use.

The tranquilizer dart misses Paul as he hurriedly tries to make it to the helicopter via Jeep. But in his haste, he drives off a curb and right over a rock, making it go into the air and land hard and crash into a tree. Paul falls out of the Jeep, severely hurt and bruised. He collapses on his knees, groaning in pain. He keeps on walking but makes a stop at the trees. He feels like he can't go further at the moment. Unknown to him, something is prowling right behind him. The creature growls and lunges at Paul. All he could do is look in the direction of the creature and scream right before it tears him apart and the screams stop...
Meanwhile...
He.... can't be serious. He didn't just called for an air-strike here. Just... he's a madman. We need to scour the island, find him. If we don't get to him, we will all die. I don't believe this...
