This is a wild guess, but Bad Milk?Everyone becomes obsessed with a weird death cult and the guy who tried to save them from it is repudiated, but in exchange, one of the cult's holy figures pays a terrible price. He must wear garish footwear forever.

I honestly can't think of what that would be other than Crash, so I'm gonna guess Crash 4, as I don't recognize this and that's the only Crash game I haven't played to some capacity.It turns out the easiest way to solve ghost problems is to just brain your teacher with a baseball bat.
